Qualiteg Selection, Idea Deep-Dive #4: How to Use Storyboards
Hello to everyone visiting the Qualiteg blog. I am Michele. Working on AI-driven new business development and marketing, I often receive questions from clients. Through this blog, I would like to offer my own answers to the challenges that anyone considering an AI-powered business is likely to face.
Storyboarding: Where Drawing Becomes Fun

You have ideas from user interviews or ideation sessions. They hold wonderful potential, but have you ever felt they still lack the detail to take shape, or that they are hard to picture concretely?
That is where the storyboard comes in.
In this fourth installment of the Qualiteg Selection idea deep-dive series, we introduce how to use storyboards to flesh out ideas and raise the quality of your services and products.
In our consulting engagements, when I suggest "Let's do a storyboard!", some people reply, "But I'm no good at drawing." That is not a problem at all!
In fact, stick-figure drawings keep extraneous information out, letting you portray the user experience realistically—which itself makes for good UX. Now, let's dive in.
Why Do Storyboards Matter?

Storyboards are a technique commonly used in film and animation production, but they are also a very powerful tool in UX/UI design.
Benefits of Using Storyboards

Express ideas visually
- By expressing abstract ideas as concrete scenes, everyone involved can more easily share the same mental image.
Simulate the experience from the user's perspective
- By reliving, through the story, how users will actually use the service or product, you can uncover potential issues and areas for improvement.
Understand emotions and needs more easily
- Depicting users' facial expressions, behavior, and surroundings helps you understand their emotions and needs more deeply.
An effective communication tool
- Storyboards can be used not only within the development team but also as a communication tool with clients and users.

How to Create a Storyboard

Define the user persona
- Clarify the profile of your target user.
Define the user's goal
- Clarify what the user wants to accomplish through the service or product.
Identify the key scenes
- Pick out the important scenes in the user's journey through the service or product.
Sketch each scene
- Express each scene visually using simple illustrations and speech bubbles.
Connect the scenes into a complete story
- Arrange the sketched scenes in order and link them together into a story.
Tips for Creating Storyboards
- Keep it simple and clear: Rather than detailed rendering, aim to express the key elements simply.
- Take the user's point of view: Always create with the user's feelings and behavior in mind.
- Actively seek feedback: Show your storyboard to stakeholders and exchange opinions.
